Summer Recreation
Summertime means lots of sunshine at Lake Metigoshe. You can soak it up as you hike or bike along beautiful trails in the state park. Or rent a canoe to explore the serene lakes and wetlands. You can enjoy fishing for pike, perch, and walleye in warmer months as well.
An array of regional wildlife awaits nature-watchers and photographers alike. Expect to see plenty of small mammals like beaver, woodchucks, chipmunks or catch a glimpse of white-tailed deer or even a majestic moose.
Boundary Lake
- Boundary Lake (Bottineau County): 9 miles north, 11 miles east, 2.5 miles north of Bottineau. Decent number of 6- to 8-inch perch. (No ramp).
Carbury Dam
- Carbury Dam (Bottineau County): 1 mile south, 1 mile west of Carbury. Decent number of pike. (Fishing pier).
Long Lake
Long Lake (Bottineau County): 8 miles north, 7 miles east, 1 mile south, 1 mile east, .5 miles south, .3 miles east of Bottineau. Decent pike and walleye populations. Lots of small perch. Some nice bluegill.
Loon Lake
Loon Lake (Bottineau County): 9 miles north, 4 miles east, 2 miles south, 2 miles east, .5 miles north of Bottineau. Fairly new perch fishery, with high perch numbers and some larger fish. (No ramp).
Lake Metigoshe
Lake Metigoshe (Bottineau County): 9 miles north, 4 miles east, 1 mile north of Bottineau. Holds several sizes of bluegill, including some large fish, along with some nice crappie. Good number of walleye, with a wide range of sizes. Good pike fishing, with some large fish. (Fishing pier and ramp).
Pelican Lake
Pelican Lake (Bottineau County): 9 miles north, 8 miles east, .5 miles southwest of Bottineau. Decent number of northern pike.
Strawberry Lake
Strawberry Lake (Bottineau County): 4 miles north, 2.5 miles east, .5 miles south of Carbury. Rainbow trout stocked annually. (Fishing pier).
Thompson Lake
Thompson Lake (Bottineau County): 9 miles north, 4 miles east, 2 miles south, 1 mile east, 1 mile south of Bottineau. Yellow perch stocked in 2012. (No ramp).
Heart of the Central Flyway
Heart of the Central Flyway Home of 500,000 geese; 250,000 ducks
Gateway to the Turtle Mountains
Ruffed grouse, duck, whitetail deer, moose.

J Clark Salyer Wildife Refuge
Bird Watching: The J. Clark Salyer NWR is located along the Souris River in north-central North Dakota. This 58,700-acre Refuge is the largest refuge in North Dakota.
Forest Service - Walk/Hike
Forest Service – The Turtle Mountain State Forest consists of 7,814 acres of woodlands, wetlands and grassland. Common trees and shrubs include aspen, balsam poplar, bur oak, green ash and paper birch. The forest also has many species of fruit and nut-producing shrubs, such as chokecherry, pin cherry, juneberry, plum and hazelnut.

Butte Saint Paul - Walk/Hike
Butte Saint Paul – Butte St. Paul was named by pioneer Missionary George Anthony Belcourt, the second pastor in North Dakota’s history. It was once considered the highest spot in North Dakota and offers scenic views of the lush Turtle Mountain area in northeast North Dakota.
Annie’s House Adaptive Program
Annie’s House (Adaptive Program) – Annie’s House Adaptive Recreation Program at Bottineau Winter Park provides services year-round to individuals and veterans with intellectual and physical disabilities. We offer programing that allows individuals with disabilities to enjoy the same activities as nondisabled individuals. We offer adaptive equipment, trained instructors in a nonjudgmental friendly and fun environment. Scholarships are available for qualifying individuals. Spring Summer and Fall: For our snowless months of the year we offer fishing, canoeing, paddleboats, hiking and biking and horseback riding.
Boating, camping, canoeing, cycling, fishing, golf, hiking, hunting, rollerblading, swimming–with several lakes in the Turtle Mountains, your summer possibilities are endless!
Fall & Winter Recreation
Winter turns Bottineau county into a snow-covered playground. Lake Metigoshe State Park contains multi-use trails for cross-country skiing & snowshoeing. It also connects to over 250 miles of groomed snowmobile trails in the Turtle Mountains. A section of the scenic Peace Garden Snowmobile Trail runs through the park before winding its way toward the International Peace Garden.
Downhill skiing, snowboarding, and snowtubing is also available at the Bottineau Winter Park. The mountain facility offers a variety of trails, so that beginners to experts can have a blast down the slopes.
Ice fishing on Lake Metigoshe attracts visitors from around the state and across the Canadian border. The frozen surface creates a unique angling experience and has been (and will continue to be) an addicting pastime for locals and travelers alike.

Bottineau Winter Park – Located 8 miles north and 1.5 miles west of Bottineau. Rents ski equipment, snow boards and tubes. Offers 9 slopes with chair lift, bunny hill, several tube runs, snowboard ‘half-pipe’ toboggan chute. Has instructors available, ski patrol and a full service beautiful new chalet with concessions, restrooms and plenty of indoor seating with views of the slopes. Open seasonally from Thanksgiving weekend to mid-March.

Area Attractions
The Outdoor Learning Center offers interactive sessions within Lake Metigoshe State Park. The program pairs groups with a knowledgeable instructor, who leads a 1 to 2 hour lesson on topics ranging from botany to survival skills.
The International Peace Garden is about a 30-minute drive from the town of Bottineau. This expansive outdoor memorial space straddles the border between the United States & Canada. It has been maintained for decades as a mark of friendship and commitment to peace between the two countries.
Mystical Horizons is a modern-day interpretation of Stonehenge on the prairie. Enjoy stunning views of farmland and the Turtle Mountains from this vantage point. This location is made especially for viewings of the Summer and Winter solstices and the Spring and Fall equinoxes.
Bottineau is home to Tommy the Turtle: a 26-foot-tall, must-see statue of the world’s largest turtle riding the world’s largest snowmobile. Not only is he a local mascot, but also marks the “gateway to the Turtle Mountains.”. You can find him in Tommy Turtle Park, a family-friendly location that offers recreational courts, restroom & bathhouse facilities, picnic areas, and of course – excellent photo opportunities.
Outdoor Learning Center
The Outdoor Learning Center program is available at Lake Metigoshe state park. This program offers ecology, conservation, cultural and recreational programming in an outdoor setting.
International Peace Garden
Nestled in the Turtle Mountains is a garden. A celebration of peace, a living monument to the ideals of friendship and cooperation among nations. Acres of uninterrupted prairie, forests and radiant floral gardens are defined by nature, not borders.
Mystical Horizons
Mystical Horizons, located near Carbury, North Dakota on the Scenic Byway on North Dakota Highway 43 near the North Dakota and Manitoba border, is intended to represent a 21st-century Stonehenge. It consists of six pink granite walls of varying heights that function as a working solar calendar.
Tommy the Turtle
Tommy Turtle is 30 feet tall. He is the Largest Turtle in the World and he straddles the Largest Snowmobile in the World, which is even larger — 34 feet long. He guards the entrance to Bottineau’s municipal tennis courts. He weighs three tons.
